City of Winnipeg invites residents to cool off during forecasted high heat

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg invites residents to access clean drinking water at hydration stations, and come in and cool off in civic facilities during regular operating hours, as high temperatures are forecasted over the next few days.

As a pilot project, the City is installing three hydration stations during the summer months which will allow residents to access clean drinking water. The first hydration station was installed today at Central Park (near 406 Edmonton St.). The others are anticipated to be installed in the coming days at the following locations:

• Selkirk Avenue at Powers Street 
• Broadway Neighbourhood Centre

Leisure centres and City libraries are available to act as ‘cooling areas’ where the public may come in for relief from the heat and have access to drinking water during operating hours. City indoor pools and outdoor spray pads are also great ways to cool down.

Safety Tips for Hot Weather

Residents are reminded of the following heat safety tips:

• Stay hydrated. Don’t wait to feel thirsty to drink water. Limit alcohol consumption.
• Check on vulnerable family, friends and relatives, especially older adults or individuals with medical conditions.
• Stay in the shade and wear a hat and loose-fitting clothing. Be especially mindful of sun exposure for babies and young children and try to keep them in the shade when possible.
• Ensure children and pets are never left alone in closed vehicles or direct sunlight.
• Extreme heat is very dangerous. Call 9-1-1 if you or someone you know is exhibiting symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
• When using additional cooling appliances such as portable air conditioners, do not overload electrical circuits as this can create a fire risk.

Section of King Street to close starting Friday

Winnipeg, MB – King Street, from Notre Dame Avenue to McDermot Avenue, will be closed on Friday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. until Saturday, June 18 at 7 a.m. for film production. The east sidewalk will remain open.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Rannock Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:09 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire at a two-storey house in the 5900 block of Rannock Avenue.

When crews arrived on-scene, they found smoke coming from the house. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 3:07 p.m.

The two occupants who were in the house self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. On-scene paramedics transported them both to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Poplar Avenue

Released: 8:05 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 6:09 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire at a combination one storey, two-storey commercial complex in the 300 block of Poplar Avenue.

Once on-scene, crews found smoke throughout the interior and located the source of the fire in a boiler room. They launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 6:39 p.m.

Occupants of the complex self-evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The boiler room suffered minor fire damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
