Consultant Agronomist

The Manitoba Organic Alliance is seeking an Agronomy Consultant to advise certified organic farmers on adopting on farm practices to improve soil health.

Hours: Half-time, 1 year contract
Start date: 14 February 2022
Salary/Wage: Wage negotiable, plus travel costs
Location: Working from primarily from home. Travel to visit farm will be required.

Work with and advise organic farmers on best management practices related to nutrient management, cover cropping, increasing perennial plantings, minimizing tillage, improving crop rotations, and integrating livestock onto their land.
Assist farmers in designing and implementing MOA’s cost-share program.
Visit farms to assess current farm practices and to provide personalized agronomic advice.
Consult with organic farmers in person/online/over the phone about improving the health of their soils.
Use the University of Manitoba’s nutrient budgeting tool, interpret lab results, and advise on farm practices/goals.
Collect data required for funding report from farmers.
Report to MOA team and board about project progress on a regular basis.

Education and Skills:
BSc in Agronomy with a training in organic production. Undergraduate level courses in organic production considered an asset.
Professional designation (P.Ag. or Tech.Ag.) with Agrologists Manitoba or ability to obtain at early stage of employment.
Located in Manitoba and ability to travel to rural areas within the province.
Valid Manitoba driver’s licence and access to own vehicle.
Knowledge and experience in organic crop production and soil testing procedures.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Reliable internet connection and cell phone.
Proficient in Microsoft Suite and familiarity with Google Drive.
Excellent interpersonal skills and an interest in working with farmers.
A positive disposition, an eagerness to learn, a strong attention to detail, and an ability to work independently and on a team.
