Agriculture and Resource Development is recruiting for a 52 week non-seasonal departmental position with the Wildlife Health Program in the Wildlife, Fisheries and Resource Enforcement Branch. The Wildlife Health Program monitors and manages the health of Manitoba’s wildlife species, in particular, cervids, ursids, bovids, canids, avian, and other terrestrial species.  Diseases such as bovine tuberculosis (TB) and chronic wasting disease can have devastating effects on deer, elk, and moose populations. The Program maintains a high level of surveillance for disease outbreaks, cooperates with other agencies and stakeholders in disease management and prevention, and is prepared for quick responses to any threat to wildlife population health. 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Full Stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Must possess a current Canadian Firearm Safety Certificate, course report or Possession and Acquisition Licence
  • Must be physically able and willing to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position, including working in remote locations with difficult terrain, removing big game heads with hand meat saws or electric reciprocating saws, gross dissection, bagging and loading of these heads into fridges, freezers and truck beds, driving all-terrain vehicles, etc.
  •  Must be willing and able to fly in both small fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft for approximately 6 hours per day
  • Graduation from a Manitoba Hunter Safety Program or equivalent from other province
  • Must be able to travel to various locations in province with possible stays for extended periods of time
  • Must be willing and able to work outdoors in various weather conditions

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Post Secondary degree or diploma in Natural Resource Management, Wildlife Management or a related field. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may also be considered
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Manitoba wildlife and identification
  • Experience in hunting, field dressing, and carcass handling
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience in public speaking and presenting technical information
  • Experience working with/collecting data and integration into GIS systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with research, analysis and written report preparation
  • Experience using GPS for recording, downloading, and uploading data
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office including establishing, maintaining and managing data in Excel and other electronic databases
  • Knowledge and/or experience in sample collection, preparation and biological laboratory techniques and methods.

Duties:
Under the direct supervision of the Wildlife Health Program Manager, the Wildlife Technician and Big Game Health Program Coordinator will assist Wildlife Health Program staff in the development and delivery of the Bovine TB, Chronic Wasting Disease programs, and other wildlife and wildlife health projects.  The incumbent functions as a wildlife technician responsible for coordinating and administering the provincial Wildlife Bovine TB Program and for wildlife disease sample collection and data management in support of provincial wildlife disease programming. The incumbent also provides support to other regional wildlife managers and programs. The Wildlife Technician and Big Game Health Program Coordinator will be required to compile and analyze data, prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations, and attend meetings of various governmental and non-governmental groups including hunters and the general public. The incumbent will be responsible for general laboratory operations and maintenance, wildlife sample collection both in the lab and in the field, and will use sharp saws, knives, other related biological lab equipment, and will be required to lift heavy equipment and/or wildlife parts. The incumbent will provide support and assist in flying aerial and ground wildlife surveys and will also be required to perform light maintenance on equipment and facilities.
