JACKSON, TN – The Kansas City Monarchs defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (30-31) Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark at Jackson by a score of 8-3.
It was the Goldeyes’ 33rd and final game in west Tennessee. The team is scheduled to return to Winnipeg Tuesday, August 3rd.
Kansas City (37-22) struck early when Darnell Sweeney hit a three-run home run to right-centre field just three batters into the game.
Winnipeg responded in the home half of the first inning when Max Murphy doubled to right field to drive in Tyler Hill and cut the Monarchs’ lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Goldeyes trimmed the deficit to one run when Logan Hill singled to right-centre field to bring home Kyle Martin before Raul Navarro scored on a double play ground ball off the bat of Wes Darvill to even the score at 3-3. The two clubs hit into a combined seven double plays over the course of the afternoon.
Kansas City erupted for five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Three consecutive RBI doubles by Colin Willis, Charcer Burks, and Will Kengor made it 7-3 before Kengor scored the game’s final run on a throwing error.
Re-signed earlier in the day, Greg Harris (1-4) started and took the loss for the Goldeyes. He worked five innings, allowing five runs on just three hits while striking out five. Ken Frosch, Kyle Thomas, Bud Norris, and Austin Henrich each pitched an inning in relief for Winnipeg.
Jameson McGrane (4-1) earned the win for Kansas City while Elroy Urbina picked up his first save of the season after pitching the final three innings.
The Goldeyes will now make their first visit since 2019 to Lewis & Clark Park in Sioux City, Iowa where they will open a three-game series with the Explorers Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca.
In the coming days, the Winnipeg Goldeyes will contact Season Ticket and Mini Pack holders with ticket options for the remainder of the 2021 season and will be given priority on seat selection. Individual tickets will go on sale to the general public on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.
